Blackened Dragonscale Farming Guide

Blackened Dragonscale is a special material used by high-end Leatherworking patterns in the Cataclysm expansion. This Blackened Dragonscale farming guide is intended to help you find the best places to gather these scales so you can get to crafting! Blackened Dragonscale is acquired by Skinning Dragonkin of the appropriate level range (81+).

• Blackened Dragonscale can be gathered by Skinning level 81+ Dragonkin.
• Cataclysm dungeons can also be a great place to get this material, particularly Grim Batol which is full of high Dragonkin who have a 35-50% chance to drop it when skinned. But you will need a group and it will be a bit slower than farming mobs in the open world.

Twilight Highlands

• This is the best place to farm Blackened Dragonscale due to the density of the Dragonkin in this area as well as their relatively high chance of dropping the item when skinned.
• If you have the quest Blackout, you will have access to the item Wyrmhunter Hooks, which will allow you to kill the Obsidian Pyrewings without them being able to fight back.
• You’ll be skinning Obsidian Charscales, Obsidian Pyrewings, and Obsidian Viletongues, level 85 Dragonkin in the Obsidian Forest. They each have about a 35-38% chance to drop Blackened Dragonscale when skinned, otherwise they will drop Savage Leather.

Deepholm

• This is a great alternative if the area in Twilight Highlands is occupied.
• You’ll be skinning Stone Drakes, level 83 Elite Dragonkin in The Pale Roost. The nearby giants are throwing rocks and knocking them out of the sky, so they won’t be too tough to kill even though they are Elite. They have about a 30% chance to drop Blackened Dragonscale when skinned, otherwise they will drop Savage Leather.

Mount Hyjal

• This area is excellent if you have the quest Disassembly, which gives you the item Thisalee’s Shiv, allowing you to kill the large Twilight Juggernauts. However, the mobs will not spawn here if you have progressed past a certain point in the zone story.
• You’ll be skinning Twilight Dragonkin, Twilight Dragonkin Armorers, and Sethria’s Hatchlings, level 81 Dragonkin at Sethria’s Roost. They all have about an 18% chance to drop Blackened Dragonscale when skinned.
