Volatile elements are among the most in-demand crafting materials in Cataclysm. They’re required for many endgame recipes and can be challenging to farm, which tends to make them especially valuable. Among these five items is Volatile Fire, which is best farmed in the Twilight Highlands zone. It can be fished from Pools of Fire or obtained by killing fire elementals.

• Volatile Fire does not require any particular profession or skill to gather. It can be looted directly from mobs.
• That being said, Fishing provides the easiest means of collecting these items via Pools of Fire, which are included in this guide.
• If you have Alchemy, you can use Transmute: Living Elements to transform Volatile Life into one of the other four volatile elements. Performing this transmutation in the Mount Hyjal zone will guarantee that you get a Volatile Fire.
• If you have Mining, you may occasionally get a Volatile Fire or another volatile from ore nodes in level 80-85 Cataclysm zones.
• If you have Skinning, you may very rarely get a Strange Bloated Stomach when you skin a mob in level 80-85 Cataclysm zones. This item has a chance to contain any of the five volatiles.
• In the open world, the best place to farm Volatile Fire is Twilight Highlands.

Twilight Highlands

Pool of Fire (Fishing)

• Fishing these pools is the best way to farm Volatile Fire, assuming you don’t have a lot of competition.
• You’ll be fishing from Pool of Fire, which looks like a ring of fire, inside the Cannon’s Inferno area.
• While you wait for the pools to respawn, you can kill Enslaved Infernos nearby (see next map).

Enslaved Inferno

• This is the best place to farm Volatile Fire from mobs, and these mobs can be killed while you wait for Pools of Fire to respawn.
• You’ll be killing Enslaved Inferno, level 85 fire elementals, around the Cannon’s Inferno area.

Unbound Emberfiend & Bound Fleshburner

• If the pools and/or mobs in the South are being farmed, you can head to the North of the zone instead.
• You’ll be killing level 84 fire elementals: Unbound Emberfiend inside the red outline at Humboldt Conflagration, and/or Bound Fleshburner inside the yellow area at Ruins of Drakgor.

Mount Hyjal

Pool of Fire (Fishing)

• This is another option for farming Volatile Fire if there are too many people in Twilight Highlands.
• You’ll be fishing from Pool of Fire, which looks like a ring of fire, inside the large lava pools in the Throne of Flame area.
• While you wait for the pools to respawn, you can kill Flame Ascendants nearby (see next map).

Flame Ascendant

• This is another area where you can farm Volatile Fire from mobs if Twilight Highlands is too competitive or if you are waiting for Pools of Fire to respawn nearby.
• You’ll be killing Flame Ascendants, level 81 humanoids around the Ascendant’s Rise area.
• There will be many more fire elementals to farm in the southern portion of Mount Hyjal when the Firelands patch is released.
