Having proper addons and macros are essential. Not just for the hardcore player, but for anyone trying to be a competent healer. Through these tools we completely change the way we heal, and how we process the vast amount of information necessary to min/max our gameplay.
I would argue that having a clean, highly functioning UI is more important for a healer than anyone else. More than anyone we need to be focused on a particular UI element (raid frames), so it’s important that relevant information is viewable in your peripheral. Your UI should enable you to track your procs and follow the fight, while never needing to overt your eyes off your raid’s health.
Addons
General
These addons are essential for a Holy Paladin.
- Deadly Boss Mods – This allows you to track boss abilities. Without this, you’ll simply be reacting to raid frames instead of anticipating the damage before it happens.
- Details – This tracks DPS and HPS, but more importantly allows a healer to check how a player died. If a raider dies it’s critical to know how long they went without a heal, so you can assess whether or not the fault was your own.
- Pally Power – This assigns and keeps track of blessing buffs. It is incredibly convenient and a huge quality of life boost. This is universally used amongst Paladins, and it can be frustrating grouping with a Paladin that does not have this installed. Don’t be that guy!
- WeakAuras – The most powerful addon there is. Expanded on below.
WeakAuras
WeakAuras are a necessity for our class. This extremely powerful addon can be used for just about anything you can imagine– from tracking cooldowns and procs, to boss abilities and swing timings. Playing without this addon would be a mistake! Below are some of the WeakAuras I use, which you should be able to easily import.
All the buffs you need to maintain in one compact row. Don’t love the look of it? Don’t worry, after a few minutes of fiddling with settings it will integrate perfectly into your UI.
This tracks three important procs that most Holy Paladins will need to be aware of:
Darkmoon Card: Greatness is useful to track, as it can often be good to stack with Divine Plea.
Infusion of Light should be used on Holy Light, but it is often best to spend it on an instant cast Flash of Light if you happen to be moving. This WA will help you track when Infusion of Light procs so you can react accordingly.
If you use a Flash of Light or Holy Shock on your Soul Preserver procs, you will waste a small amount of mana. If possible, try to always spend your Soul Preserver procs on Holy Light. This WeakAura helps you do just that.
This WeakAura has DBM and Bigwigs integration to help you land the perfect pre-pot every time. Use a Potion of Speed as late as possible, just before your tank pulls a boss.
This is a comprehensive CD tracker for the entire raid. Track everything from Misdirection and Tricks of the Trade to Divine Sacrifice and Divine Hymn. Knowing what cooldowns are available to your raid can help you gauge when to use your own.
This WeakAura will help track the uptime of any defensive cooldowns that reduce the damage taken of a tank. This includes spells like Pain Suppression, Shield Wall and Guardian Spirit. Use this to time the perfect Hand of Sacrifice and to be more aware of your tanks well-being.
This boss swing timer will help you time your Holy Light casts with the bosses swings. This invaluable piece of healing tech is what separates the good from the great. The goal is to have a cast land on the tank immediately following a swing, instantly topping them.
My swing timer is particularly awesome compared to others out there. Notice how in the first picture, my cast bar is on track to finish before the mobs attack. The background of the swing timer in this scenario is yellow.
But in the second picture, my cast bar is on track to finish after the mobs attack and the swing timer background changes to a light blue. This way you always know if you’re on track to hit the perfect Holy Light at a glance.
My cast bar is an edited Quartz, a cast bar addon.
WeakAura Import Codes
Macros
Mouseovers
Virtually every healing spell should be put into a mouseover macro. When healing by default, you would need to click a player and then hit your healing hotkey. This saves us a step, by removing the need to actually target the player you would like to heal. This will quickly become very comfortable and improve your reaction times immensely. Batched in with these mouseovers I’ve included the lines /startattack to ensure that at every opportunity your character will be auto attacking to regain mana from Seal of Wisdom.
Cooldown Macros
These are especially important. Use them to optimize how you use your cooldowns!
Cancelaura Macros
Lots of Paladin abilities are a double edged sword. We will often want to remove one of our cooldowns early, explained below.

Hey lettara, thanks so much for these! all of these are great except the timer for sacred shield–it doesn’t appear to be lining up with the actual cooldown for some reason. any thoughts?
do you have a macro for dps so i can have offencive holy shock shield of the righteous and exorcism on one button?
Where’s the macro for cancel Cancelaura Divine Sacrifice? And when would you NOT use the macro, but manually hit Divine Shield followed by dsac?
Same thing for Hand of Sacrifice. There’s just a lot of outright omitted or neglected information here.
