Intro
Beyond improving your knowledge about the specialization you intend to play and your equipment, you also have access to additional tools that can improve your quality of life and increase your overall performance. The tools we will be talking about are called Addons and Macros. Addons are stand-alone improvements that you can acquire, being an external tool while Macros are provided by the game itself, representing an internal tool.
Addons
As a Death Knight, you do not require a vast amount of addons, what you will want to acquire are the main general macros that every specialization and class use in order to improve their performance and a few other addons that help you better keep track of your own diseases and runes.
General
- Details – An advanced tool that records and shows “details” of every ability that you cast and how much damage or healing it does, extremely useful and to some extent mandatory in order to keep track of your own performance and that of others.
- Recount – An early version of “Details” that still maintains its position strong up to this day, recount offers the same services, only at a much simpler and direct level.
- DeadlyBossMods – This allows you to keep track of important abilities and mechanics that most mobs or bosses will be using, both in dungeons and raids. This is pretty much a mandatory tool that most people are using.
WeakAuras
WeakAuras is an addon that comes with a lot of versatility to it. It offers you nigh limitless possibilities when it comes to the way you want to utilize it. You can utilize it in order to keep track of certain cooldowns or mechanics, create vocal warnings when certain events are about to happen, and many more possibilities. You can achieve this with this addon by conveniently installing mini-addons called themselves “WeakAuras”, with some people placing entire presets of WeakAuras all over the internet in order to further make the addon more convenient.
You can find WeakAuras that suit your needs on wago.io. It’s strongly recommended that you use WeakAuras; they’re a huge quality of life boost.
Unholy Death Knights can utilize Weakauras in order to better keep track of their diseases and runes while also placing notifications on important buffs that modify your overall damage such as Desolation. Furthermore, you can also choose to place on display in a more convenient and visible place the duration of trinket procs and potions duration, helping you execute your burst phase properly.
DKDiseases
DKDiseases is an addon that allows you to place trackers on your screen for diseases, basically offering a simpler way of keeping track of Diseases in the case that you do not manage to properly setup WeakAuras. The addon in itself is simple to use and can improve your overall quality of life.
Macros
As an Unholy Death Knight, there are not many Macros you can utilize since most of your abilities share a Global Cooldown. However, you can use general macros that improve the overall quality of life when it comes to your pet behavior and general mouseover macros.
Cooldown Macro (AKA Swifty Macro)
This macro uses all of your cooldowns at once, so you don’t have to use them individually. Includes trinkets, potions and engineering enchants. Will skip any cooldowns that are currently not available, so you don’t have to worry — just mash this macro when you want to “pop off”! It is optimal to use this macro when one of your proc items, like trinkets or weapon enchants, proc.
#showtooltip Summon Gargoyle
/cast Summon Gargoyle
/use [combat] 13
/use [combat] 14
/use [combat] Potion of Speed
/use [combat] 10
/startattack
/petattack
Start Attack & Pet Attack Macro
You can use this macro for any of your abilities, allowing you to immediately begin attacking while also making sure that your pet does not slack. Simply replace “Icy Touch” with the names of your other abilities — it works for all of them.
#showtooltip
/cast Icy Touch
/startattack
/petattack
1-Button Death Coil
This macro allows you to use Death Coil on your target, yourself or your pet. This will be very useful for when you want to heal yourself (during Lichborne) or your pet, without changing target. Simply hold shift when pressing your button to heal your pet, hold alt to heal yourself, or hold neither to use it on your target.
#showtooltip Death Coil
/cast [mod:alt, @player] [mod:shift, @pet] [] Death Coil
The gargoyle macro is absolutely awful as it uses your trinkets/racials after summoning the gargoyle, missing the entire snapshot and costing you DPS.
Avoid.
Indeed. Currently my macro looks like this:
#showtooltip
/cast [nostance:3] Unholy Presence
/use [stance:3] 14
/use [stance:3] 13
/cast [stance:3] Blood Fury
/cast [stance:3] Summon Gargoyle
/cast [stance:3] Blood Presence
/petattack
/startattack
You should also include a /use 10 (Hyperspeed Accelerators) and /use Potion of Speed prior to the Summon Gargoyle.
whats stance 3 14and 13 trinkets ?
Stance 1/2/3 refer to your current Presence.
Stance 1 is Blood Presence, Stance 2 is Frost Presence, and Stance 3 is Unholy Presence. The macro having “/use [stance:3] spell” means it will only use the spell if you are currently in stance 3, otherwise it will do nothing.
14 and 13 are your trinket slots, having a macro that says “/use 13” will use the top trinket, and having one that says “/use 14” will use the bottom trinket.
This allows you to just have a trinket button on your bars without having to swap it everytime you change trinket.
the petattack doesn’t work for me, it casts Gnaw instead of just attacking, i have Gnaw macro to time the stun during fight. help me. wotlk unholy dk pvp, when i press icy touch i just want my pet to attack only or Claw, not Gnaw
Do you have Gnaw set to auto-cast? The macro does not contain Gnaw, so if Gnaw is not set to auto-cast there is no reason it should be casting.
You are not able to heal yourself with deathcoil
Yes you are with Lichborne which is in every pvp build for fear removal.
you need lichborne, Then you can heal yourself with deathcoil
I’m cool with this comment since we shouldn’t have Lichborne in a PvE spec build… so it should get removed tbh
