Blizzard Clarifies: Which Cooldowns Don’t Reset After Raid Fights in WotLK Classic

Players were thrilled after Blizzard’s post from a few days ago, where they announced that many abilities with cooldowns longer than 2 minutes would have their cooldown reset after a fight with a raid boss ends. This solves an all-too-common problem where players would frequently have to wait for many minutes for some of the longer raid cooldowns Heroism / Bloodlust to be available again, which was particularly grueling during progression raids.

Naturally however, which cooldowns will make the list of things that get reset, and which won’t? Well, Aggrend has come in with a post clarifying just that. We now know that every ability with a cooldown longer than 2 minutes will be reset, except for the following:

Furthermore, Aggrend has clarified that Blizzard are aware of a widely-speculated possible exploit regarding this system, wherein a player (such as a Hunter with the Feign Death ability) quickly pulls a boss and immediately resets it, allowing their raid to always have these extremely powerful cooldowns while they’re fighting trash mobs. He states that Blizzard have put protections in place that will prevent such an exploit, though he didn’t clarify how these protections work. Finally, he said that Blizzard plans to monitor player behaviour with this system, and change things if necessary.

What are your thoughts on this topic? Are you happy with the list of spells that don’t get reset, or do you think there are spells that should / shouldn’t be on it? Do you think the cooldown reset system is a good addition? Let us know in the comments below!

Hi Again!

I Wanted to pop back in here and provide a bit of clarity around a few things that we’ve seen concerns around.

To start with, here is the full list of abilities currently excluded from resetting when an encounter ends (via wipe or completion):

  • Army of the Dead
  • Lay on Hands
  • Fire Elemental Totem
  • Earth Elemental Totem
  • Astral Recall
  • Reincarnation
  • Ritual of Doom

Additionally, we have some protections in place that will prevent the use case where a hunter or other class that can quickly and safely exit combat repeatedly pulls a boss and leaves combat in order to reset cooldowns while the rest of the raid is elsewhere in the dungeon pulling trash packs. I’m not going into full detail on how this works, but it is not our intent to create a situation where 24 players are in one part of the dungeon participating in the raid, and one raid member is the dedicated “buff resetter”.

We’ll continue to closely monitor the behavior around this and how its used and make additional adjustments if it makes sense to do so.
