atiesh quest line guide sod classic era

Welcome to the WoW Classic Era Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian guide! This guide will teach you everything you need to know about the legendary staff, and what path you must take to attain the former weapon of the last guardian, Medivh. The epic journey you’ll embark on will have you assault the dreaded Necropolis, Naxxramas, venture into the mysterious desert of Tanaris, fight against some of the most iconic characters in WoW, C’thun, and Kel’thuzad, and finally sneak into the undead-infested ruined town of Stratholme.

The legendary staff is available to 4 classes, Mage, Warlock, Priest, and Druid, coming in 4 different variants, with each variant being unique to its respective class.

Season of Discovery

Season of Discovery is yet to reveal anything about Naxxramas or Atiesh‘s possible buffs. Once more information is revealed in the Season of Discovery regarding Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian we will update this part of the guide with all the available information!

How to Acquire Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian

Similar to the other legendary items in the WoW Classic Era, Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian must be reconstructed. As the staff was obliterated in the destruction of Dalaran at the hands of Archimonde, you will have to gather its shattered pieces which were scattered all over the world, and reform the legendary weapon.

The Journey’s Beginning – Raiding Naxxramas

To begin your epic journey of acquiring Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian, you must first prepare to assault the fearsome Necropolis, Naxxramas. Killing the bosses of Naxxramas will reward you with Splinter of Atiesh. You will need to gather a total of 40 x Splinter’s to begin the quest line. However, the drop chance for a Splinter of Atiesh is not 100% guaranteed, with each boss generally dropping one splinter. As the drop chance is different from one boss to another, several runs will be required.

Once you gather the 40 x Splinter’s and have them in your bag, you can click on one of them to form the Frame of Atiesh. Creating the Frame of Atiesh and clicking on it will start the quest Frame of Atiesh. The quest details that you will need to find the missing pieces of the staff while also mentioning that the staff seems to be possessed by an evil entity of Sargeras, requiring you to find someone to aid you with its cleansing.

Travelling to Tanaris

To find someone who can help you with this task, you will need to head over to Tanaris and find the mysterious Caverns of Time. The one who can help you is an extremely powerful dragon named Anachronos. However, to be able to interact with Anachronos you will need to have at least a Neutral Reputation with the Brood of Nozdormu.

If you haven’t encountered the Brood of Nozdormu before or haven’t participated in the Ahn’Qiraj opening events or its raids, encountering the Brood of Nozdormu the first time will always set your reputation to the “Hated” status. To raise your reputation to Neutral status all you have to do is raid the Ahn’Qiraj Ruins and the Ahn’Qiraj Temple, as killing bosses inside the raids drops Qiraji Lord’s Insignias which can be used to grow your reputation with the Brood of Nozdormu.

Once you can interact with Anachronos and turn in the Frame of Atiesh quest, you will now be able to pick up the follow-up Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff quest!

Return to Naxxramas and a Journey to Ahn’Qiraj Temple

This part of the quest line will require you to acquire the Staff Head of Atiesh from Kel’Thuzad and the Base of Atiesh from C’thun. With Kel’Thuzad being the last boss of Naxxramas and C’thun being the last boss of Ahn’Qiraj Temple, you must ensure that you form a very strong group of adventurers and bring forth their defeat. Both the Staff Head of Atiesh and the Base of Atiesh have a 100% drop chance, meaning that only one run of each raid will be required (assuming nobody else in your group also needs it).

Once you acquire both the Staff Head of Atiesh and the Base of Atiesh, return to Anachronos to turn in the Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff quest. With the staff reformed, Anachronos tells you that you must cleanse it of the evil that lies within, and hands you the Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian quest.

Cleansing the Staff in Stratholme

This quest will require you to head to Stratholme and battle the entity within the staff to cleanse it, killing the entity that corrupts it in the process. Anachronos will give you Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian in its corrupted form upon accepting Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian quest which you must use in a specific area of Stratholme. Once you reach Stratholme, you will have to head over to Festival Lane, which is a specific street inside the dungeon that can be easily accessed by choosing the right path after entering through the Front Entrance. You will, however, need the Key to the City to open the doors to the Festival Lane.

It is advised to bring a Protection Warrior and a class that can cleanse curses for this encounter and a very strong group, as the boss has a very specific weakness that can be exploited by a warrior and a powerful debuff that must be dispelled!

Upon reaching Festival Lane, you will have to carefully look for a patch of consecrated ground that looks out of place and use the staff on it. The patch of consecrated ground can be easily spotted as a small white-looking flame is burning right on top of it. However, before interacting with the object you should make sure that you are fully prepared, as the battle that awaits you is very difficult. Clicking on the staff while standing on the consecrated earth will allow you to summon Atiesh, Hand of Sargeras!

Atiesh will be an extremely difficult fight, with the boss having multiple abilities. His most powerful abilities are Unholy Aura and Breath of Sargeras. Unholy Aura acts as a DoT effect that can’t be dispelled meaning that Shadow Resistance is key to this fight while Breath of Sargeras is a Curse placed on a player that must be dispelled as it reduces Melee and Ranged Attack by a huge amount. As mentioned before, a Warrior is advised for this fight as Atiesh can be disarmed, dropping one of his legendary blades, Andonisus, Reaper of Souls, as a result. Any Melee Class that can wield Swords can pick up the blade afterward and use it for up to 5 minutes, resulting in some very high DPS against Atiesh.

A Last Visit to Anachronos

Upon defeating the demon, all you have to do is head back to Anachronos and turn in the Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian quest to receive the purified form of Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian!
