This guide will cover how to get the Brain Freeze rune for Mages in Season of Discovery. We’ll go over all of the locations and requirements in the walkthrough below as well as any useful tips and tricks.

- Slot: Feet
- Added: Phase 2
- Level: 30 (Required)
How to Get the Brain Freeze Rune
This discovery was simplified in Phase 5. Now, if you have discovered any of the following runes, you will be able to purchase the other runes for your alts without having to go through the entire questline again:
- Druid Eclipse Rune
- Hunter Trap Launcher Rune
- Mage Brain Freeze Rune
- Paladin The Art of War Rune
- Priest Mind Spike Rune
- Rogue Poisoned Knife Rune
- Shaman Ancestral Awakening Rune
- Warlock Shadow and Flame Rune
- Warrior Enraged Regeneration Rune
To do this, visit Pix Xizzix at Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale (28.4, 75.8) and buy an Emblem of Dishonor for 5 Tarnished Undermine Real. Then take this item to a Rune Broker in one of the following locations to obtain the rune:
Cut-Throat Alley in Stormwind City (57.5, 26.9)- The Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge (53.0, 12.8)
Cleft of Shadows in Orgrimmar (49.5, 46.0)- The Spirit Rise in Thunder Bluff (22.8, 13.8)

The Illari Duskfeather Questline
To get the Brain Freeze rune, you must be level 30 to start the quest. If you’re not a night elf, you will need to fight a level 40 NPC at the end of the quest chain.
Head to Desolace and look for an Extinguished Campfire on a cliff overlooking the Kodo Graveyard (47, 54). Interact with it to pick up the quest Highway Robbery.

The quest will send you to Bibbly F’utzbuckle outside Kormek’s Hut, the building that is marked at the northern crossroads (63, 39). Speak with him to progress to the quest On the Lam.
Next, head to Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale and find Tokal inside The Salty Sailor Tavern (27, 77). Speak with her to progress the quest to Cherry for Your Thoughts? Then visit Nixxrax Fillamug, the Food and Drink vendor nearby, to buy a Cherry Grog for 3

. Talk to Tokal again progress the quest to No Honor Among Thieves.
Finally, head to Arathi Highlands and look for a Rowboat near Thandol Span, the bridge to the south that connects the zone to Wetlands (53, 91). You’ll have to cross the rope bridge beside the larger stone bridge and pass through a small camp of level 30-32 Dark Iron Dwarves. Go down the hill and use the Rowboat and it will teleport you to the east coast of the zone on the other side of the mountain range.
Follow the coastline from the boat to a small dock. There you’ll find Illari Duskfeather, a night elf. Speak with her and progress her dialogue. Night elves have the option to agree with her and continue without fighting. Otherwise you will have to fight her. She’s level 40.
Defeat Illari and she’ll vanish, leaving a Dropped Pouch on the ground where she was standing. Click on it to get Illari’s Key. Look for Illari’s Loot Cache, a small chest in front of the nearby shack on the dock. Open it to loot a Jewel-Encrusted Box. Right-click this box in your inventory to get your Spell Notes: Brain Freeze.
When you’re done, you can take the Rowboat back to Thandol Span.
