There are several ways that you can boost your Fishing skill. This comes in the form of lures, poles, gear, and even an enchantment. You can use these to make it easier to catch fish, or as a way of meeting a minimum requirement for fishing in a zone.

Even with a skill level of 300, you will still need to use special equipment to avoid catching junk in high level zones. The highest level fishing areas require a total Fishing skill of 425. This guide will cover all of the fishing equipment that is available in Classic WoW to help you become the best angler in all of Azeroth!

Fishing Poles

A fishing pole is required to fish, but not all fishing poles are made equal. Different poles come with different +skill to Fishing which allows a permanent bonus to your skill while equipped.

Arcanite Fishing Pole is the best fishing pole in the game, but it can only be obtained by winning the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Extravaganza. It is one of the possible rewards for completing the quest Master Angler during the tournament. This quest is offered by Riggle Bassbait at Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale. It can only be completed during the tournament, which takes place every Sunday from 2-4 PM server time.

Nat Pagle’s Extreme Angler FC-5000 is a reward from the Horde-only quest Snapjaws, Mon! in The Hinterlands. This quest is offered by Katoom the Angler at Revantusk Village in The Hinterlands and requires killing 15 Saltwater Snapjaws, level 50 turtles found all along the coast of The Hinterlands.

Big Iron Fishing Pole can be looted rarely from Shellfish Traps in Desolace. This fishing pole is not soulbound, so it can be traded or sold on the Auction House. The traps are located underwater near Shadowprey Village, which as a Horde town, but Alliance players should be able to reach them as well. You may need to open quite a few traps before you find the fishing pole. Some form of underwater breathing will make this a lot easier to do.

Darkwood Fishing Pole can be caught while fishing in level 10-20 zones. It’s a rare drop, but is not soulbound, so you can also trade it or buy it from the Auction House.

Strong Fishing Pole is sold in limited supply by most Fishing Supplier vendors. It offers a slight improvement over the other vendor pole until you’re able to acquire one of the fishing poles above.

Blump Family Fishing Pole is a reward from the Alliance-only quest Wow Alliance Crest The Family and the Fishing Pole that is offered by Gubber Blump at Auberdine in Darkshore. This quest requires catching 6 Darkshore Groupers, which can only be caught from the waters in Darkshore (along the coast near Auberdine or in the two rivers that run through the northern and southern parts of the zone). These fish are not used for anything else so there’s not much point in farming or keeping them.

Fishing Pole is the most basic pole and can be bought from any Fishing Supplier vendor.

Lures

Lures provide an additional temporary boost to your Fishing skill to help minimize fish getting away. This is most useful for high level zones and for when trying to maximize skill increase speed, since you don’t gain any skill when fish get away.

Lures may not be necessary, especially if you are already high level skill and fishing in a lower level area. They don’t increase the chance of getting better fish – all they do is boost skill level, which in turn allows fishing in higher level water and/or minimizes lost fish due to skill.

You have plenty of options for lures depending on your current skill level. Aquadynamic Fish Attractor offers the highest skill boost and can be made with Engineering or purchased on the Auction House, or occasionally bought from vendors. The buff provided by this lure only lasts for 5 minutes, though, where all other lures last for 10 minutes.

Aquadynamic Fish Attractors can be crafted with Engineering using the recipe below. They can also be purchased in limited supply at Fishing Supplier vendors or from the Auction House.

Flesh Eating Worms can be looted from Rotted Ones in Duskwood. Nightcrawlers can be looted from many undead mobs across Azeroth.

Aquadynamic Fish Lens are available only in a single stack of 20 as a one-time reward for the Alliance-only quest Wow Alliance Crest Electropellers that is offered by Wizbang Cranktoggle at Auberdine in Darkshore. This quest requires catching 12 Electropellers, which can only be fished up from the two rivers in Duskwood (not along the coast) while you have the quest.

Bright Baubles and Shiny Bauble are sold by Fishing Supplier vendors.

Gear & Enchants

Apart from fishing poles and temporary lures, there are a few other ways to boost your Fishing skill. Check out our Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Extravaganza Guide for a complete guide to the competition, which is where you will get all of the best fishing items!
