This guide will cover how to get the Ice Lance rune for Mages in Season of Discovery. We’ll go over all of the locations and requirements in the walkthrough below as well as any useful tips and tricks.

How to Get the Ice Lance Rune
This is the first rune you’ll be able to pick up. Unlike other Mage runes, this rune can only be obtained in your own race’s starting zone. You won’t be able to complete the quest in other zones.
Gnomes
To get the Ice Lance rune as a Gnome Mage you need to reach level 2 and then check in with Marryk Nurribit, the Mage Trainer, to pick up the Spell Research quest. He is located inside Anvilmar in Dun Morogh on the far end of the bunker.
Once you pick up the quest, head out of Anvilmar and take the road to your right. You will find an abandoned camp with a few Troggs around it. Between the two damaged tents, a chest awaits where you can find Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
Open the chest and pick up the notes. Once they are inside your inventory, you can decipher them using a Comprehension Charm to get Spell Notes: Ice Lance. Right-click this item to learn the rune. You can then activate it by going to your character window and equipping it on your Gloves slot.
Save your remaining Comprehension Charms for deciphering other Spell Notes and Mage Scrolls.
Humans
To get the Ice Lance rune as a Human Mage you need to reach level 2 and then check in with Khelden Bremen, the Mage Trainer, to pick up the Spell Research quest. He is located inside Northshire Abbey in Elwynn Forest, on the upper level of the Library Wing.
Once you pick up the quest, head east of Northshire Abbey into the Northshire Vineyards and slay Defias Thugs to recover Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
Once they drop it, you can decipher it using a Comprehension Charm to get Spell Notes: Ice Lance. Right-click this item to learn the rune. You can then activate it by going to your character window and equipping it on your Gloves slot.
Save your remaining Comprehension Charms for deciphering other Spell Notes and Mage Scrolls.
Trolls
At level 2, you can accept the Spell Research quest from Mage Trainer Mai’ah (42.5, 69.0) in the Valley of Trials in Durotar — she can be found to the left of the entrance to The Den. Then head into the cave in the north of the region and jump into the water in the back of the cave. There, you’ll find a chest that contains the Spell Notes: CALE ENCI scroll you can decipher using a Comprehension Charm to get Spell Notes: Ice Lance. Doing so will both complete the quest and allow you to learn the rune. Once you’ve done so, you can activate it by going to your character window and equipping it on your Gloves slot.
Save your remaining Comprehension Charms for deciphering other Spell Notes and Mage Scrolls.
Undead
Upon reaching Level 2, you can pick up the quest Spell Research from Mage Trainer Isabella in the Deathknell Chapel in Tirisfal Glades. Then head to the southeastern corner of the area, and kill Scarlet Initiates until one of them drops Spell Notes: CALE ENCI. You can decipher them using a Comprehension Charm to get Spell Notes: Ice Lance. Doing so will both complete the quest and allow you to learn the rune. Once you’ve done so, you can activate it by going to your character window and equipping it on your Gloves slot.
Save your remaining Comprehension Charms for deciphering other Spell Notes and Mage Scrolls.
