How to Get the Icy Veins Rune
As of Phase 6, all runes and skill books can be purchased from Rune Brokers in starting zones and major cities for 1 copper a piece. Each of these vendors is simply named “Rune Broker” and can be easily spotted by their purple glow, lurking very close to where new characters enter the game. You can see all of their locations in our guide below.
Original Discovery Method
This is the first in a series of runes that involve collecting books to turn in to your faction’s Librarian in either Stormwind City or Undercity. Each rune in the series requires collecting more books, with the books that you collected for previous runes counting toward the total:
- Icy Veins (Phase 1) (10 books)
- Spell Power (Phase 2) (20 books)
- Deep Freeze (Phase 3) (25 books)
- Arcane Barrage (Phase 4) (35 books)
Acquiring this rune requires running all over the map, so we recommend you wait until at least level 20 when you can train Blink and your Portal spells to make getting around easier. You can certainly start working on this earlier, however.
To obtain the Icy Veins rune, you will need to collect 10 different books from the lengthy list at the bottom of this guide. You can turn in each book individually for a Comprehension Charm – you do not need to hold onto them and turn them all in at once. They will still count. You can turn in the books at your faction’s librarian.
Alliance Librarian
To turn in your books on Alliance, head to a Garon Wendell, the Librarian in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City (38, 81). You’ll find him at the top of the tower inside the Wizard’s Sanctum. When you’ve turned in 10 of the books he will offer the quest Friend of the Library. Complete this quest to learn Engrave Pants – Icy Veins.
Horde Librarian
To turn in your books on Horde, head to a Owen Thadd, the Librarian in the inner part of the Magic Quarter of Undercity (74, 33). When you’ve turned in 10 of the books he will offer the quest Friend of the Library. Complete this quest to learn Engrave Pants – Icy Veins.
Book Locations
We’ve grouped the books you can collect according to zone for convenience. Note that some zones have more than one book. Books in zones that are controlled by the opposite faction will be the most difficult to pick up, and most players will choose to skip them.

Look for the ruined structure in the center of the area and head down the stairs. You’ll see some Scrolls leaning against the wall on one of the landings. Runes of the Sorcerer-Kings
This book can be obtained from a cave in Mo’grosh Stronghold in Loch Modan. This is a tough book to get as a Horde Mage due to the distance you have to travel to get to Loch Modan. You could opt to skip this one entirely. Otherwise, you can get it on the same trip as the book in Wetlands.
To get to Loch Modan as Horde, you’ll have to pass through Arathi Highlands from Hillsbrad Foothills, doing your best to avoid the level 30+ mobs you’ll come across, and then cross the bridge south to Wetlands. Arcanic Systems Manual
This book can be found at The Sludge Fen in The Barrens (56.3, 8.8). The Barrens is a Horde zone and a bit of a trek for Alliance players, who will have to go through Ashenvale to get there. There are three books in this zone, so you will most likely want to pick them all up on the same trip. You could also work on your Rewind Time Rune in the same zone.
The Sludge Fen is in the northeast corner of the zone. Climb the oil rig in the pond and head into the control room where Supervisor Lugwizzle hangs out. You’ll find the book on one of the chairs behind him. It will just say Manual if you hover over it. Click it to pick up your Arcanic Systems Manual.

Crimes Against Anatomy
This book can be found inside the Dawning Wood Catacombs in Raven Hill Cemetery in Duskwood (6.7, 28.5). This is one of the more challenging books to get since the crypt is dense with higher level (27-28) undead. You may also encounter PvP here as this is a contested zone and there are multiple runes in the area.
The Mass Regeneration Rune requires visiting the same crypt, so you may want to knock them both out at once.
Enter the crypt just south of the big house on the northwest end of the cemetery (16.0, 38.5). Descend the stairs and continue straight, going all the way down and straight ahead through the catacombs. In the back of the last room you’ll find a Spellbook glittering on an alchemy table. Click it to pick up Crimes Against Anatomy.
Goaz Scrolls
This book can be obtained from Whelgar’s Excavation Site in Wetlands (33.6, 47.9). This is one of the more tedious books to get as a Horde Mage due to the distance you have to travel to get to Wetlands. You only need 10 books to get the rune, so you could opt to skip this one entirely. Otherwise, you can get it on the same trip as the book in Loch Modan.
To get to Wetlands, you’ll have to pass through Arathi Highlands from Hillsbrad Foothills, doing your best to avoid the level 30+ mobs you’ll come across, and then cross the bridge south to Wetlands. Wetlands is a contested zone, but it’s also an Alliance quest zone, so you can expect to encounter plenty of Alliance players here.
Once you’re in the zone, head to Whelgar’s Excavation Site, which is located in a little valley on the west side of the zone. Video Walkthrough
This video is from Phase 1 and only contains the first set of books, but it should still be helpful for obtaining this rune.
secrets of the dreamers is indeed entrance of WC, however, ur map ping is wrong atm
Once you have your books. You turn them in to one of the NPC’s. The one in iron forge didnt work so I went to SW mage tower where Garion Wendell had a ! above his head. It might look like you are turning the books into Comprehension Charms. Don’t worry you get the charms and Garion keeps track of the books automatically. Once you have turned in 10 Garion will give you the rune automatically. Just keep turning them in until you reach 10. You will have Charms and the rune at the end.
Thank you! I made some edits to clarify about the Charms, and removed the extra librarians.
i got 10 but got nothing so far

Added!
i have all 13 books and still cant get the damn rune
and yes i have tried talking to the librarians………….
Sounds like you might have a bug. I’d try making a ticket with Blizzard
I have 10/13 books, but they all disappeared randomly from my inventory and I’m only holding on to the 2 most recently acquired… Spoke to one NPC L and they want a library scroll which I’m not sure where to acquire… the others won’t talk to me. Pretty sure this rune is bugged…
Definitely sounds like a bug. I’d make a ticket with Blizzard
You could have been a little more clear — I don’t mind the long walk, that was fine. The MULTIPLE 19-20 elite mobs however make it impossible for a mage to solo this… you could have pointed that out from the start.
