Phase 4 of Season of Discovery brings many new craftable items that are highly coveted by the majority of players. One such highly desired item is the Brilliant Chromatic Cloak, being available through Leatherworking. Like many of the new craftable items, Brilliant Chromatic Cloak is a Bind-on-Equip item, meaning that it can be directly bought. Alternatively, you can craft it yourself if you fancy a bit of adventure!

Recipe & Prerequisites

There are two things that you must acquire before being able to craft the Brilliant Chromatic Cloak: The recipe, Pattern: Brilliant Chromatic Cloak, and the Dragonscale Leatherworking skill.

The Pattern: Brilliant Chromatic Cloak is harder to acquire than the Dragonscale Leatherworking skill, as the former is locked behind a very low drop chance. As such, we suggest you start by acquiring the Dragonscale Leatherworking skill!

Learning Dragonscale Leatherworking

To learn Dragonscale Leatherworking, you will need a character that is at least level 40 and a 225 skill in Leatherworking. Once you have both of those, you will have to head over to Azshara and find Peter Galen! He can be found south of the Ruins of Eldarath, somewhat close to the center of Azshara.

Once you reach Peter Galen, you can talk to him to start the Dragonscale Leatherworking quest. The quest is rather simple, involving bringing a few crafted items and Dragon Scales to Peter Galen. All of the items can be directly purchased from other players or the Auction House, but you can also craft/gather them yourself.

Required items:

If you choose to gather and craft the items manually, you will need to head over to Tanaris and get the recipes for Tough Scorpid Breastplate and Tough Scorpid Gloves. You will be able to get the recipes from Wastewander Thief and Wastewander Bandit.

The Worn Dragonscale can be acquired from a multitude of sources, however, the most reliable one is through Skinning or by purchasing them off the Auction House. You will be able to acquire Worn Dragonscale by skinning a multitude of mobs that belong to the “Dragonkin” category that can be found all throughout Azshara, Dustwallow Marsh, Burning Steppes, Winterspring, Feralas, Badlands, Temple of Atal’Hakkar, and The Hinterlands. Additionally, Worn Dragonscale can drop from Otherwordly Treasure, which is a Warlock-specific quest reward, and from the Knot Thimblejack’s Cache inside Dire Maul.

Once you acquire the necessary items, head back to Peter Galen and turn in the Dragonscale Leatherworking quest to learn the Dragonscale Leatherworking skill!

Visiting Dire Maul for the Recipe

Once you acquire the Dragonscale Leatherworking skill, you will have to head over to Dire Maul and acquire the Pattern: Brilliant Chromatic Cloak. This part can be difficult since the item can only be looted from the Knot Thimblejack’s Cache. The cache can be looted multiple times, being available each time the dungeon is reset. The main issue with this part of your journey is that the Pattern: Brilliant Chromatic Cloak only has a 2% drop chance.

As stated previously, if you choose not to pick it up yourself, you can always buy the pattern from another player or the Auction House!

Required Materials for the Brilliant Chromatic Cloak

Once you have both the Pattern: Brilliant Chromatic Cloak and the Dragonscale Leatherworking, all you have to do now is gather the required materials for crafting the Brilliant Chromatic Cloak!

For this part of your journey, you will either require a considerable amount of gold or the Skinning profession! As mentioned previously, if you choose the path of grabbing all the materials yourself, you will have to skin a lot of Dragonkin and Dragons, among other creatures to acquire the necessary materials.

Required items:

The easiest materials to acquire from this list are Rugged Leather, Cured Rugged Hide, and Rune Thread. The Rugged Leather and Cured Rugged Hide can be easily crafted with Leatherworking or even skinned from some mobs while the Rune Thread can be directly bought from vendors since it’s categorized as Trade Goods.

The Black Dragonscale can only be acquired from Black Dragonkin, with the majority of them being found in either the Blackwing Lair, Burning Steppes, or Blackrock Spire. The Red Dragonscale can only be acquired from Red Dragonkin and can be skinned from mobs found in Blackwing Lair, Wetlands, and Blackrock Spire.

The most difficult item to acquire is the Brilliant Chromatic Scale as it’s highly coveted and can only be acquired by skinning Chromatic Dragonkin. You will only be able to encounter such Dragonkin in Blackrock Spire and from Chromaggus in Blackwing Lair.

Once you acquire all the necessary materials, all you have to do is open up your Dragonscale Leatherworking and craft the Brilliant Chromatic Cloak! However, as mentioned at the start of this guide, you can also simply buy the item if you have more gold than you can spend if you don’t wish to embark on this epic journey.
