The Blood Moon Stranglethorn Vale PvP Event Guide for Season of Discovery (SoD)

The Blood Moon Stranglethorn Vale PvP Event Guide for Season of Discovery (SoD)

Phase 2 brought a new tier of endgame content to Season of Discovery, including a new PvP event in the Stranglethorn Vale zone. Like the Battle for Ashenvale event from Phase 1, The Blood Moon offers valuable rewards in the form of PVP gear and two unique mounts. Unlike the Battle for Ashenvale, however, this event does not have any PVE objectives. It’s a straightforward battle royale, a kind of zone-wide extension of the Gurubashi Arena event from Vanilla WoW.

This guide has been updated for Phase 3 and will cover how the event works, how to opt out of The Blood Moon, and all of the rewards you can get from the event vendor.

The Blood Moon Event

Every three hours, a red fog settles over Stranglethorn Vale, and for 30 minutes, the entire zone becomes a free-for-all PVP zone. That means that players from either faction can attack you and vice-versa, with the exception of members of your own party. During this event, players will also gain 30% increased Stamina.

To discourage players from forming larger groups and sweeping through the zone, you will get a debuff if you are in a raid group while The Blood Moon is active.

Killing another player during the event will earn you five stacks of Blood for the Blood Loa, a buff that you can collect up to 255 stacks of. While you have this buff, you can head to one of five Altar of the Blood Loa that spawn during the event, which will be marked by red flags on your map. There you can trade the buff in for an equal number of Copper Massacre Coins that can be used to purchase event rewards. When you have 100 of this item, you can right-click them to trade them for a Silver Massacre Coin. 100 silver coins can be right-clicked to get a Gold Massacre Coin. You can also trade each coin for lower-level coins at the rewards vendor.

When you die, you’ll receive the Drained of Blood debuff for 20 seconds that will make you invisible and immune to attack. You won’t be able to cast any spells, but you’ll be able to move around and mount up.

While the event is active, the Booty Bay guards will neglect their duty, so the town is not a safe haven – although they do appear to defend players who have opted out of the event. Flight Masters also turn hostile, preventing you from using them to escape or get across the zone.

During the event, there will be a boss patrolling the zone, Kha’damu, the Chosen of the Blood Loa, who you’ll have to watch out for. He one-shots players and gives a debuff when you get close to him, but being in range of him will cause you to gain more Blood for the Blood Loa stacks per kill.

The event always begins at midnight server time and every three hours throughout the day:

  • 12:00 AM
  • 3:00 AM
  • 6:00 AM

Where to find the Zandalarian Emissary

Players who wish to opt out of the event can do so by speaking with a Zandalarian Emissary. You will receive the buff Zandalari Ward, which prevents your own faction from attacking you. Normal PvP rules will still apply on PvP realms (the opposite faction will be able to attack you) and you will be unable to earn any event rewards.

There are several Zandalarian Emissaries in the zone. They have a large glowing drop of blood over their heads to make them easy to spot. Here are their locations:

  • Neutral:
    • Outside the inn in Booty Bay (27.3, 77.1)
    • On the dock at Ratchet (63.6, 38.7)
    • Exhal on Yojamba Isle can give the buff (15.2, 15.6)
  • Wow Alliance Crest Alliance:
    • Just inside the entrance to the zone from Duskwood (39.4, 5.4)
    • Just outside the entrance to the zone in Duskwood (49, 85.3)
  • Horde:
    • There are two atop the zeppelin tower at Grom’gol Base Camp (31.4, 29.5)
    • Atop the zeppelin tower in Tirisfal Glades (61.9, 59.2)
    • Atop the zeppelin tower in Durotar (50.7, 12.7)

Stranglethorn Vale Map

Stranglethorn Vale is famous as a common place for ganking and other open world PvP shenanigans. The zone is accessible to both factions and contains a large number of quests for a wide range of levels, making it an inviting place to level. It is also home to the largest neutral city in the game, Booty Bay.

  • Booty Bay offers an inn and flight masters for both factions as well as a boat to Ratchet in The Barrens.
  • Horde have an extra hub at Grom’gol Base Camp, where they can hop on a zeppelin to Orgrimmar or Undercity. They also have a second inn and flight master here.
  • Alliance don’t have their own separate hub here, but they do own the neighboring zone of Westfall, giving them another way to access the zone.
  • There is a level 60 raid entrance, Zul’Gurub, in the northern part of the zone with high-level elite trolls that should be avoided.
  • There is also the Gurubashi Arena, a free-for-all PvP arena in the center of the zone.

The Blood Moon Rewards

The following items can be purchased from Mai’zin, the event rewards vendor at the entrance to Gurubashi Arena (31.4, 48.6). Note that almost all of these items are marked as “Unique-Equipped: Blood Moon (1),” meaning that you can only equip one of these items at a time, with a couple of exceptions. The epic items are also class-specific.

Shipment of Stranglethorn Lumber can be turned in for the quest Stranglethorn Lumber at your faction’s Arathi Basin entrance in Arathi Highlands.

The Blood Moon Mounts

There are two mounts available through The Blood Moon event. Both mounts are brand new skins of existing models and can be obtained by either faction. These are regular mounts that will require Riding skill to use, and can be used anywhere. They can be purchased from Mai’zin for a Gold Blood Coin.
