Wailing Caverns Dungeon Guide

Wailing Caverns is located in The Barrens, making it primarily for Horde players, although Alliance players can run it if they are willing to make the long trip. Inside Wailing Caverns, you’ll find beasts, mutations, and the night elves known as the Serpent Lords. You’ll also help to awaken the night elf Naralex as he rests in a deep slumber.

Location & Map

The Wailing Caverns dungeon entrance is located in The Barrens, just southwest of The Crossroads. The cave opens up at the Lushwater Oasis at 46.0, 36.3. From there you can follow the cave all the way down to the Cavern of Mists, where you’ll find the dungeon entrance.

The Wailing Caverns feature multiple quests, with 5 of them being neutral quests while the other 2 are Horde-only. While most of the quests can be directly picked up, 2 of them require you to complete a quest chain first. A few of these quests require collecting numerous items inside the dungeon and can be completed over multiple runs.

Horde Quests

Serpentbloom

To complete this quest you will need to gather 10 Serpentbloom that can be found throughout the Wailing Caverns. Serpentbloom has random spawn points, meaning that you can find it almost anywhere, both inside the dungeon and outside it.

Leaders of the Fang

Quest Starting Point

This quest can only be picked up after completing a long chain comprised of 5 quests. While this quest can technically be acquired at level 10, the chain that needs to be completed before requires a higher level.

To be eligible for the Leaders of the Fang you need to complete:

Once you finish the prerequisite quests and pick up the quest from Nara Wildmane, you will need to head inside the Wailing Caverns dungeon, kill 4 targets, and collect their various gems: Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahan, Lord Pythas, Lord Serpentis. When you have all 4 gems, return to Nara Wildmane to collect your reward.

Neutral Quests

Deviate Eradication

To complete this quest you simply have to head inside the Wailing Caverns dungeon and kill the following mobs:

Once you kill the mobs, return to Ebru inside the hidden alcove above the cave entrance to complete the quest.

Deviate Hides

To complete this quest you need to collect 20 Deviate Hides from the mobs inside the Wailing Caverns. Those can be picked up almost all mobs that can be skinned, so that you can pick them up from Vipers, Crocolisks, Raptors, Turtles, and even Skum. Once you collect all the Deviate Hides, return to Nalpak inside the hidden alcove above the cave entrance to complete the quest.

Trouble at the Docks

To complete this quest you need to head inside the Wailing Caverns (the cave outside the dungeon) and look around for Mad Magglish. He is in stealth and can spawn in several locations within narrower parts of the cavern. Once you kill him, you can loot the 99-Year-Old Port and return it to Crane Operator Bigglefuzz.

Smart Drinks

This quest is part of a chain, requiring you to complete the Raptor Horns quest in order to be eligible for it.

To complete this quest you need to kill Evolving Ectoplasm mobs in the Wailing Caverns and loot 6 Wailing Essence. Once you gather the essence, return to Mebok Mizzyrix to complete the quest.

Glowing Shard

This quest can be picked up after killing Mutanus the Devourer and looting the Glowing Shard. You will need to be at least level 15 to use the Glowing Shard. To complete this quest you simply need to deliver the item to Falla Sagewind in Ratchet.

Bosses

There are nine bosses inside Wailing Caverns, including one rare boss who does not always appear.

Kresh

Kresh is a turtle boss found wandering the stream in the Wailing Caverns. The boss infrequently drops a good defensive shield for leveling tanks.

Strategy

  • Tank: Tank the boss facing away from the group. He has high armor and deals significant physical damage, so use defensive abilities.
  • Healer: Maintain healing on the tank throughout the fight.
  • Damage Dealers: This is a tank and spank encounter. Kresh has high armor, so casters have an advantage in dealing damage to the turtle.

Loot

Lady Anacondra

Lady Anacondra is another boss in Wailing Caverns, and has the ability to put party members to Sleep if her cast is not interrupted.

Strategy

  • Tank: Establish and maintain threat on the boss while DPS maximize their damage output.
  • Healer: Keep your party members topped off, with focus on your Tank.
  • Damage Dealers: Do as much damage as possible while watching your threat. Lightning Bolt can be interrupted. Sleep can be interrupted. Thorns Aura can not be purged Healing Touch can be interrupted. Sleep can not be casted on the tank.

Lord Cobran

Lord Cobrahn is a boss in Wailing Caverns located in the Pit of Fangs. The boss is accompanied by three Deviate Pythons which are to be AoE damaged to death before focusing on the boss.

Strategy

  • Tank: Focus on doing as much threat as possible on the boss, so the DPS can go all-out. Lord Cobrahn’s Lightning Bolt and Healing Touch can be fully interrupted. If your healer is targeted by Druid’s Slumber, use any cooldowns you have to live while your healer is slept.
  • Healer: This fight is a tank and spank so you should focus your healing on the tank. At any time, Lord Cobrahn may cast Druid’s Slumber, sleeping you for 8 seconds. Maintain any heal over time effects you have on your tank, and be sure to keep him topped off at all times so he can survive while you are slept.
  • Damage Dealers: Do as much damage as possible while watching your threat. Lord Cobrahn’s Lightning Bolt and Healing Touch can be fully interrupted. As a damage dealer you might be subjected to the Druid’s Slumber spell, effectively putting you under a sleep effect. Lord Cobrahn casts Cobrahn Serpent Form to transform into snake form under 50%. Lord Cobrahn casts Poison while in snake form.

Deviate Faerie Dragon (Rare)

Deviate Faerie Dragon is a rare spawn found infrequently along the caves.

Strategy

  • Tank: Maintain threat on the Deviate Faerie Dragon so the DPS can kill the boss.
  • Healer: Keep the tank alive.
  • Damage Dealers: This boss is simple. DPS down without pulling threat.

Lord Pythas

Lord Pythas is another druidic boss located in Wailing Caverns with the same Healing Touch, Lightning Bolt, and Sleep abilities.

Strategy

  • Tank: Establish threat on the boss and the adds, so that DPS can damage them down one at a time.
  • Healer: Focus your healing on the tank, as they will be taking damage from the adds as well as the boss.
  • Damage Dealers: Lord Pythas is accompanied by an add, Druid of the Fang. Lightning Bolt can be interrupted, Sleep can be interrupted, Healing Touch can be interrupted.

Skum

Skum is a Thunder Lizard located in the Winding Chasm of Wailing Caverns.

Strategy

  • Tank: Tank the boss facing away from the group.
  • Healer: Focus on healing the tank while staying spread out to avoid being hit by Chained Bolt.
  • Damage Dealers: Chained Bolt can be interrupted. Skum is immune to nature damage.

Lord Serpentis

Lord Serpentis is another Druid of the Fang boss located in Wailing Caverns.

Strategy

  • Tank: Establish threat, and be prepared to interrupt Healing Touch or Sleep if possible.
  • Healer: Keep healing the tank, and be aware of any other party members who are taking damage.
  • Damage Dealers: Lord Serpentis is not accompanied by any adds. Lightning Bolt can be interrupted, Sleep can be interrupted. Healing Touch can be interrupted.

Verdan the Everliving

Verdan the Everliving is an elemental boss found near the waterfall after Lord Serpentis. The boss’s Grasping Vines ability roots all targets within 10 yards for 10 seconds and stuns them for two seconds.

Strategy

  • Tank: This fight is a Tank and Spank except for Grasping Vines, which you cannot do much about as the tank.
  • Healer: Stand at maximum distance to avoid being hit by Grasping Vines. Use shields and HoT effects to help your Tank while they are knocked down by Grasping Vines, as they will not be able to defend themselves.
  • Damage Dealers: Verdan the Everliving casts Grasping Vines, stunning for 2 seconds and rooting the player for 10 seconds. This spell can not be interrupted. Ranged should stay 10 yards away to avoid being affected by Grasping Vines.

Mutanus the Devourer

Mutanus the Devourer is the final boss in Wailing Caverns, and is summoned from the pool after escorting the Disciple of Naralex to the ritual stone. Protect the Disciple from Mutanus to be successful in this encounter.

Strategy

  • Tank: Tank the boss away from the Disciple of Naralex to avoid him taking damage. Use defensive cooldowns to help your healers recover from Thundercrack.
  • Healer: Focus on healing your tank, and topping off your Melee DPS after the boss uses Thundercrack. Stay at maximum range from the boss.
  • Damage Dealers: Mutanus casts Terrify on other targets, (Healer should stay far away from the boss). Naralex’s Nightmare can be interrupted. Basic tank and spank fight, must kill the adds first before the boss emerges from the water nearby. There are a total of 7 oozes and 3 snakes.
