Blizzard Entertainment announced today that World of Warcraft: Classic will be playable, at least in limited form, for the company’s annual fan convention November 2-3.
The announcement was made as part of an announcement of video content for Virtual Ticket buyers to BlizzCon; those buyers will receive a code to download a demo version of the game. The 35,000-odd players attending the show at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center will have access to the demo on the show floor. Home viewers will be able to access the demo after the opening ceremony ends, around 1 p.m. Pacific time on November 2. The demo will be available until approximately 10 a.m. Pacific on November 8.
The popular massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft has been around for 14 years as of this November, and it’s changed a lot in that time. There were no draenei or worgen, pandaren or blood elves, let alone any of the newer races. Horde players couldn’t make paladins, and Alliance players couldn’t make shamans. The world-cracking events of the Cataclysm hadn’t yet happened, making the game’s geography and questing experience very different.
New additions such as the scaling technology that allows players to choose the zones where they level didn’t exist. Neither did achievements, battle pets or transmogrification to change the appearance of gear. If you’re nostalgic for the days when it took days, not hours, to get from levels 1-60, you’re about to have your chance to relive it.
Fans have been clamoring for WoW: Classic for years, and impromptu servers had sprung up over time to allow players the opportunity to return to the halcyon days of “vanilla” WoW. Blizzard had moved to close those servers as part of protecting its intellectual property, but committed at last year’s BlizzCon to investigating an official Classic version of the game. A recent developer’s blog commented on that progress.
