Just about any Wrath of the Lich King content you want to do will require heading to Northrend first. Getting to the northern-most continent of Azeroth is mostly a matter of taking the right boat, zeppelin or portal, but you may also want to start the questline before you do. We’ll start this guide with the introductory quests. If you just want to get to Northrend to do other things, you can skip to the last section, “Portals and Transports to Northrend.”
Starting the Wrath of the Lich King Story
The first step in getting to Northrend is to start the Wrath of the Lich King storyline. If you haven’t reached level 50 on any character yet, you may need to complete the Dragonflight introduction before these options become available. We have a separate guide for that here. Once you have completed the introduction, you should be able to start the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Your character must be at least level 10 to start these quests.
This introductory quest chain will take you through a quest or two in your capital city before sending you off to the continent.
How to Get to Dalaran
Dalaran is the capital city of Northrend. Getting to Dalaran for the first time used to be a bit of a journey, but now you can simply hop on a flight path from your starting base in Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord. These points are connected to Dalaran by default.
You can also take a portal to Dalaran from Stormwind or Orgimmar, or ask a mage to port you to the city.
Inside Dalaran you’ll find a return portal to your capital city (Stormwind or Orgrimmar) to make getting back and forth easy.
Note that there is another version of Dalaran in the Broken Isles. Make sure you’re going to the right one. The Dalaran you want is in Crystalsong Forest in Northrend.
Portals and Transports to Northrend
There are a number of ways to get back and forth to Northrend.
