We just saw the first BlizzCon since 2019, and boy was this a big weekend for World of Warcraft! Blizzard announced not one, but three new expansions in the pipeline: The Worldsoul Saga. They also had multiple announcements for Classic WoW.
Here’s a quick list of the World of Warcraft expansions and game modes that were announced at BlizzCon:
- New Retail WoW Storyline: The Worldsoul Saga
- WoW Expansion 10: The War Within
- WoW Expansion 11: Midnight
- WoW Expansion 12: The Last Titan
- New Season of Vanilla Classic WoW: Season of Discovery
- Cataclysm Expansion Coming to WoW Classic
- New Optional Self Found Ruleset for Classic Hardcore
Friday we saw the Opening Ceremonies, which included an overview of all Blizzard games. Later we had two What’s Next panels for World of Warcraft: one for retail WoW and one for Classic. Saturday brought the WoW Deep Dive for retail, with even more details about the new expansion trilogy. Throughout the weekend, streamers on Twitch and YouTube could be seen playing the new Season of Discovery on the BlizzCon floor.
This BlizzCon saw the return of fan-favorite Chris Metzen to the stage. Ion Hazzikostas was also well-received, with his “What Sword?” t-shirt, acknowledging the Sword of Sargeras meme that is finally being addressed in the new storyline. You can see the sword again in the shiny new cinematic trailer for The War Within later in this post – a video worth watching for its impressive fidelity as well as for the story. (Apparently Chris Metzen also wrote the trailer.)

World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Discovery Announced at BlizzCon
In Season of Discovery, players will discover new secrets by scouring Azeroth to find class-altering abilities. Tanking Warlocks, Mage healers, and more will be possible. The Season will launch with an initial level cap of 25, and upon reaching max level, players will be met with a new level-25 endgame! Discover a 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid with new and reimagined bosses, mechanics, and rewards. Not long after, the level cap will be increased by a few levels, bringing even more endgame content.

WoW Classic: Cataclysm Classic Announced at BlizzCon
World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale took to the BlizzCon 2023 stage to announce the next expansion for World of Warcraft Classic. Next year, Classic progression realms will advance from Wrath Classic to Cataclysm Classic, with a few changes based on player feedback and requests.
