World of Warcraft: Waving Goodbye

bye bye

The time has come to cancel my subscription to World of Warcraft. I would like to say that “I do not make this decision lightly” but I was actually surprised at just how easy a decision it turned out to be.

My time spent in Azeroth has dwindled over the past few months. In fact my interest was waning half way through Wrath of the Lich King. Although I put this down to the general lull in enthusiasm that generally sets in just before a new add-on is released.

I even tried giving myself a blog-based boot up the jacksy. Trying to desperately come up with good reasons why I wasn’t playing. Trying to find something that could re-ignite that spark that I’ve had almost consistently for 7 years or so.

Lately though, I’ve been thinking why I bothered. If I don’t want to play a game then I should just cancel the subscription. Why should I feel the need to have to try to keep playing when I don’t want to, and worse than that why should I feel the need to have to justify my actions to myself.

After creating large amounts of alts and even trying playing for Alliance (I was usually a Horde type of guy) it just wasn’t going anywhere.

Plus, with so many good games both out now (Dragon Age II, Fall Out: New Vegas) and out soon (Elder Scrolls 5, Diablo III, Mass Effect 3) not to mention so many other MMO’s out there that you can play for free, there was absolutely no point in continuing.

This isn’t one of those posts where I blame Blizzard for all the changes they’ve made, or vilify them for making changes to appeal for a wider audience, because they are not what has driven me away (if anything did).

Will, I re-subscribe later. Honestly, I probably will. Whenever there is a new major patch, I get curious enough to want to play but if an entirely new Azeroth isn’t going to keep me going, what’s a few patch changes going to do.

Azeroth is just going to have to sort out its problems without me.
